Show and tell

Posted by dlovell | 02/08/05

Sorry I've been neglecting my duties lately. I've been a bit busy. Plus I took a little time off to catch a show.
In my younger years, I was a long-haired heavy metal type. I listened to about everything, but my favorite album of the time was Queensryche's "Operation Mindcrime."
I saw the band about 15 years ago at the War Memorial, and it still ranks among the best shows I've seen. So when I heard they'd be performing "Operation Mindcrime" at Turning Stone Resort and Casino's Showroom, I had to go. For nostalgia's sake, mostly, but also to see a live act at that venue.
If you haven't seen a show there yet, get some tickets. It's an intimate room and there's not a bad seat in the house. You get up close and personal with the performers...

Another February...

Another February...another Black History Month...has come and gone.
The talk-show hosts have been all over Black History Month this year. They say it shouldn't be. They say we should study black history with the rest of American history. And I agree. With a few modifications.
First, American history classes have to admit one tiny little fact -- a fact that we're not even taught during Black History Month: This nation was not founded just on ideals and strength and the will to break free from mighty Britain. It was built on the backs of free labor -- on the backs of black men, women and children who had no other mission in life but to work for nothing -- not even a guarantee that they'd live to see another day...
