Electronic justice

I think of Danny Luebner often.
I never met him in person. He was dead before I'd ever heard of him. But I was there that morning, Sept. 4, 1999 -- the morning Danny's mother set fire to his house while he slept and killed him.
Danny was 13 and severely autistic. He was, by all accounts, difficult. Any parent will tell you a 13-year-old boy is difficult enough to handle. Much more so, I'd guess, if they can barely speak, read, write, or communicate their needs. Such was life with Danny, so far as I can reconstruct.
His parents, Leroy and Michele, were divorced. Michele didn't make it a secret that it was difficult to raise the young boy. She also didn't accept help from Leroy. In fact she refused it...

Government in action

Been a few days since I've updated, so I thought I'd drop a line.
It's been an interesting week. David Valesky, who unseated Nancy Larraine Hoffmann for a seat in the state Senate, took office this week. Just a bit ago, he held his swearing-in ceremony in Madison County - not a bad way to get started. His friends and family joined him in Albany for his first day on the job. And boy did they see how our government works.
The Senate session, which was to start at 1 p.m., didn't actually start until 3 p.m., because the Republicans were in a conference. Then, the body took a vote to recognize the devastation of the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia. That was it for a few hours...

King's dream in modern America

For children and government workers, Martin Luther King Jr. is being celebrated today with a day off. It's cold today - just right for sleeping in. And it was a good day to avoid the messy roads. But conditions weren't such that it would have been a snow day. Had it not been a holiday, our children would have been in school. In fact, they should have been.
What good has it done our children to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day by taking the day off, when they could learn more about Dr. King and his vision in their classrooms? Schools would be able to dedicate the entire day to assemblies and discussions about what Dr...
