Wondering about

Award-winning columnist, photographer and news writer Ellen Leahy is back as the editor of the Skaneateles Press, in beautiful Skaneateles New York.

She is the former editor of the Skaneateles Press and the Marcellus Observer, and most recently the Syracuse City Eagle. She makes her home in Skaneateles where she is also a freelance photographer and caregiver for her parents, Bill and Marion Leahy.

She began her formal writing career as a columnist with one of her hometown papers, The Duxbury Clipper, in Duxbury, MASS. Born in California, she then moved to Sea Girt, NJ. She is a product of small town America - and the late great American Middle Class.

The photo at right is the drive down to Brook Farm off of West Lake Road - one of my former Skaneateles haunts.

For Christmas’ sake -support our local business owners

eleahy, Wondering about
Black Friday on Burnet Street got a little dicey this year when a law enforcement officer did his job by ticketing 11 illegally parked cars outside of the longtime discounter Ra Lin.
An important point to consider is that Syracuse business owners walk a fine line between red and black, fighting constantly to survive against the national retail giants. Ra Lin, (Syracuse’s original discount store before WalMart, or the soon to be defunct Circuit City, were even on the drawing board) is still going strong...

Landmark Theatre hosts Warren Miller’s latest

eleahy, Wondering about
The official start of winter for many a Central New York winter fun enthusiast is when the Warren Miller film rolls into town.

Warren Miller’s “Children of the Winter: Never Grow Old” drew a decent crowd to Salina Street’s ornate Landmark Theatre. CNY skiers and boarders wandered in as they do off chair lifts, in singles, pairs or quads, some with families in tow to see the 59th annual all things skiing-plus documentary at $18.50 a pop.

I remember being introduced to the Miller flick genre when I moved to CNY in the 1970s. These were ski cult movies one viewed outside the traditional theater-setting, but I’m not sure on what, as it predated the VCR revolution...

Shoes heard around the world

eleahy, Wondering about
My first thought after I saw President George W. Bush duck, not once, but twice from a pair of hurling size 10 shoes at a press conference in Iraq was: a flashback to a history book with a picture of a biblical feast in full swing. A servant was holding a platter that he had just taken the lid off; there sat the severed head of John the Baptist complete with garnish...

Sweet Caroline

eleahy, Wondering about
People, where are your manners? I mean, what possible motivation would Caroline Kennedy have to go into governance other than good intentions. She, of all people, knows the depths of the downside.

Maybe she won’t make the cut, maybe there is a better representative out there, but let’s stop talking about her, and instead, listen to what she might have to offer as our Senator. After all, we are not in a good state here in New York. Things are at an all time low. We need some serious skills and some new ideas and insights. Business as usual in all forms of our government needs to evolve.

For me, Kennedy is the true All American White Girl turned grown woman...
