Wondering about

Award-winning columnist, photographer and news writer Ellen Leahy is back as the editor of the Skaneateles Press, in beautiful Skaneateles New York.

She is the former editor of the Skaneateles Press and the Marcellus Observer, and most recently the Syracuse City Eagle. She makes her home in Skaneateles where she is also a freelance photographer and caregiver for her parents, Bill and Marion Leahy.

She began her formal writing career as a columnist with one of her hometown papers, The Duxbury Clipper, in Duxbury, MASS. Born in California, she then moved to Sea Girt, NJ. She is a product of small town America - and the late great American Middle Class.

The photo at right is the drive down to Brook Farm off of West Lake Road - one of my former Skaneateles haunts.

My Barbie played fast and loose

eleahy, Wondering about
REPLACE THIS WITH YOUR IMAGE INFO - DO NOT USE ALL CAPS - THIS IS JUST HERE TO MAKE IT STAND OUTA vintage 1959 Barbie.
It all started with that damn sports car. As I recall, it was orange sherbet colored molded plastic with fat black wheels, a two-seater.

I took Barbie and her pal Midge over to a friend’s house; they were riding in that car. We settled down to play with our dolls in the living room and the next thing I know, Midge is out, Barbie moves over to the passenger seat and my friend’s Ken doll is behind the wheel. Ken was the molded embodiment of the actor Troy Donahue, only in buff plastic.

The two took off for a drive to the mountains, which was somewhere around the couch and behind an end table. Ken parked the car and the two hopped out, and laid down on the plush carpet. Now, mind you, I was about 7 years old at the time and very naive, a good catholic school girl...

Life or pain: some need prescriptions for both

eleahy, Wondering about
Last year I read with interest Eagle Newspapers three part series on the rise in prescription drug use in CNY’s middle and high schools. It took me back to my own school days (early 1970s), when prescriptions drugs, such as Quaaludes and amphetamines, were also passed around in school...

I take my coffee with duct tape

eleahy, Wondering about
All you need is not love. Instead, duct tape and the brewing of one’s own coffee are necessary to get along in America’s 21st century.

Let me back up. Homeland Security announced shortly after Sept. 11, 2001 that citizens of the USA should all run out and get a roll of duct tape(disregarding the fact that most of us probably already had a roll of duct tape). HS said, in case of a terrorist attack, we could duct tape ourselves into our abodes, or out, depending on the situation –something like that.

Now, with the economy in the tank, newscasters are telling us that if we just stop purchasing our cups of coffee already brewed from a retailer, we will be saving somewhere between one and two thousand dollars...
