Congratulations go out to Jabe Kile/social studies teacher, Shelly Marsh/foreign language teacher and Terry Hoey/social studies teacher, all of whom were selected as 2008 Marcellus Senior High School Mustang Award winners.
The annual Mustang Awards were initiated to combine recognition with character education. The purpose of these awards is to recognize staff members, students and community members who consistently demonstrate our high school character motto of “Integrity, Tenacity and Community.”
Staff members are selected by students, students are selected by staff recipients and community members are selected by previous recipients and the Character Education Committee. This year’s staff honorees were recognized at the March 3 Board of Education meeting. The statements below were written by students and shared at the Board of Education recognition ceremony.
Jabe Kile: “Mr. Kile is a vibrant teacher who works relentlessly each and every day to excite his students about American politics and government. A self-proclaimed ‘political science geek,’ Mr. Kile’s enthusiasm and passion for what he teaches is inspiring to his students. Mr. Kile’s classroom is a safe haven for differing opinions and ideas, which fosters a politically aware community of students. He exudes tenacity in his willingness to endlessly play devil’s advocate in the classroom, solely to challenge his students’ ways of thinking. Mr. Kile is also a man of much integrity, which is evident through his dedication to being open to what his students have to say. Mr. Kile’s interest in and respect for his students’ individuality is appreciated by all. He is a remarkable teacher, and truly deserves this award. Congratulations on being a Mustang Award recipient Mr. Kile!”
Shelly Marsh: “Mrs. Marsh is a talented, hard-working and dedicated educator at Marcellus who demonstrates the characteristics of integrity, tenacity and community each day. From bell to bell, her students are immersed in the Spanish language both orally and on paper. She makes class challenging, but fair. She is determined to prepare each and every one of her students for either the Regents exam in June or their next course come September. She is always available for extra help if her students need it, and if they don’t understand the material, she will review with them and try to teach it from another viewpoint. Mrs. Marsh incorporates new and interesting activities into her classes to make learning Spanish fun and practical. It is evident through her teaching that she is passionate about her career and truly loves being here each day. Congratulations on receiving the Mustang Award, Mrs. Marsh!”
Terry Hoey: “Integrity, tenacity and community are three words that describe Mr. Hoey. For as long as he has been teaching in Marcellus, Mr. Hoey has had a positive influence in the community and school. He is a great teacher and always puts his students first. He is very enthusiastic and loves what he does. As well as a great teacher, Mr. Hoey gives back to the community. He is one of the Ski Club advisors, works on the All School Show and does various activities within the community. Overall, Mr. Hoey not only inspires students in the classroom, but contributes a great deal to the community.”
