Grants available for home improvement

Need to make repairs to your home? The Onondaga County Community Development Division might know how to help.
On Thursday the New York State Affordable Housing Corporation approved a $300,000 grant to the organization to finance improvement for 50 single-family homes in the county.
“It’s for housing renovations for low and moderate-income homes,” said Trish Riter, housing program coordinator with the county agency. “People have to meet income requirements.”
Whether or not a family is approved for the funding is based on family size. However, there are also income limits set by the federal government. For example, a family of four is eligible for approximately $50,000 in funding.
Community Development Division administrator Linda DeFichy said the grant will be matched with $6.6 million that was recently awarded to the division for lead hazard control.
Riter said the amount received by a homeowner is also dependent on what the houses need, such as lead base paint removal as leaded paints were frequently used in homes constructed prior to 1978. The AHC grant will also be used to help bring homes into compliance with existing codes and standards along with lead removal.
“We have our target areas throughout the county that tend to be the older suburbs,” DeFichy said. “We only do work outside the City of Syracuse.”
Homes are eligible in the villages of Baldwinsville, Camillus, East Syracuse, Jordan, North Syracuse and Solvay; and the towns of Camillus, Cicero, Onondaga, Salina, Skaneateles and Van Buren. For more information, call the Onondaga County Community Development Division at 435-3558.
