City Scuffle

Walt Shepperd is a veteran of Central New York's political scuffle, having covered government and politics in Syracuse for more than four decades before being asked for press credentials.

He is the Senior Editor of the City Eagle and the Mayor of Montgomery Street in downtown Syracuse.

Shepperd is also the producer of the The Media Unit, Central New York national award winning teen performance and production troupe.

Samadee is his alter ego. At least that's the rumor.

The county Bureau of Aging and Youth’s Media Award and the Syracuse Press Club’s Public Affairs Television Award are presented each year to media professionals for notable achievements in their fields. But last week, at awards banquets where each of the recognitions were observed, two 14 year olds answered the calls to accept the framed certificates. Although still in their early teens, Ana-rachel Richardson and Anna Quackenbush are seasoned veterans of Media Unit activity, as cast members in an average annual 60 original stage performances on topics of teen concern, and alternating as host of the weekly Rough Times Live, broadcast on cable television systems in Syracuse, Binghamton and New York City...

Syracuse football: Shock hits on night one

wshepperd, City Scuffle

The football field at Kirk Park is chain locked on a Thursday evening, but the thick grassy expanse between the field and the street is the site of one of the twice a week practices for the Syracuse Shock. They gather slowly, cars pulling into a narrow parking lot, no one rushing to don their pads for the two hour session.

They have been hitting for a couple of weeks, but, as one coach announces, “This is Night One. We’re gonna see who’s the men and who’s the little boys.” As six o’clock approaches the coach’s voice becomes more insistent, “Let’s go, two minutes.”

Then, “Let’s go, helmets on.” Calls of “C’mon,” continue to the handful who tarry, seemingly reluctant to join the jog which almost finishes one lap around the field...
