Is more games better?

Clinton Portis was not going to be out there too long in Cincinnati - just a series, a chance to get hit a time or two, then safely back to the sidelines.
But one series was all it took for Portis, the Washington Redskins' most important offensive player, to separate his shoulder, making a tackle, of all things, on an interception return.
A day later, Portis, understandably frustrated, lashed out at the NFL, all but demanding that it shrink, or get rid of, the four-game exhibition schedule every team must trudge through before the real show begins in September.
This happens every August, and every time a big-name player goes down with some kind of injury in the pre-season...

A reason to smile

They’ve been around for four decades now. Judging by record alone, they’ve been an utter failure, with a grand total of one playoff victory. Punch lines and bags on the head of fans have been offered in tribute.
None of that mattered on Monday night, though. Four dozen football players, clad in black and gold, marched on to the turf of the Louisiana Superdome, and a city plagued by unspeakable tragedy felt a bit more normal.
More than ever, the New Orleans Saints have a proper name. Technically speaking, they’re not that important, for they don’t feed the hungry, or house the poor, or offer comfort and shelter to those displaced by the broken levees...
