Less experienced poets tend to say too much. I suppose they may feel that if you are going to write a poem, you should really write a poem. The problem with this is wordiness. They might be better off thinking that if you are going to write a poem, then just write a poem.

When I was teaching eighth graders about poetry, I had few rules about the writing process, but one of them was a ban on writing about the seasons, nature and love until they got a reasonable grip on the “show, don’t tell” and “less is more” philosophies...
