Remembering Camillus

Remembering Camillus

The Remembering Camillus series is written by village of Camillus native Elizabeth Lingyak Stewart. The Eagle Observer is sharing her memories with readers throughout the summer to remind local residents of Maxwell Memorial Library’s upcoming “Remembering Camillus” oral history project.
For more information about the project, contact the library at 672-3661. For more childhood memories of growing up in Camillus, see Stewart’s Remembering Camillus series each week.

The Gazebo

estewart, Remembering Camillus
Down in the village on the west side of the old Erie Canal, which flowed lazily onward, there was a very fascinating addition to village charm; it was a gazebo.
The gazebo was slightly elevated so that the observer was obliged to look upward, rendering to it a certain aura of reverence when viewing whatever was in action within its confines. The latticed decorative trim around the base of that gazebo added a touch of glamour to the structure the villagers called a band stand.
Unlike the bombastic Mr. Harold Hill of “Music Man” fame, Mr. Pabst, the teacher of the local instrumentalists, was a bit more realistic and definitely more productive of actual musical goals. He did, however, have the same kind of enthusiasm and dramatic flair that characterized the colorful Mr...

Week three: The greenhouse

estewart, Remembering Camillus
What possible connection could there be between Camillus and Shakespeare country in Merry Ole England?
Perhaps none, but as the Anne Hathaway cottages that dot the landscape of the English countryside present a special charm, so did the little white house with green shutters and a huge glass domed greenhouse attached to the back portion of its quant little structure in the village of Camillus. It was the home of dear old lady near the base of Elderkin Avenue, known also as Dutch Hill.
The little white house adorned with dark green shutters was encircled by a wrought iron fence. The gate of the fence was topped with ornate spikes...

Week two: Day of the Gypsies

estewart, Remembering Camillus
A caravan of two, three or even four cars loaded with Gypsies arriving in the middle of the village of Camillus was enough to create collective alert among the merchants and attract attention of the townsfolk.
Jim Haney, owner of the grocery store centered on Main Street and across from Kemper’s garage and gas pumps, had the advantage. His store was faced with huge plate glass windows and from the vantage point of his store there was nothing, nothing that moved in the middle of the village that went unseen.
The cars from which the Gypsies disembarked were topped with large, cloth-wrapped bundles and packages. The running boards along the side of the cars were also packed with cloth-wrapped bundles. The cars usually pulled up to the gas pumps at Kemper’s garage for refills...

Week one: Doc Cregg

estewart, Remembering Camillus
Doc Cregg was the village doctor who lived on Main Street. He was the personification of the kindly, gentle smiling country physician. In back of his white house on Main Street, several paces to the rear, was a huge red barn that housed his horse and buggy.
Whenever a light blinked on at night in his yard he could be seen, satchel in hand, hustling out ot the big red barn. Shortly, the one-hose buggy would pull out onto the pathway leading to Main Street...
