I must admit I was pretty excited about the release of iPhone 3G. As an AT&T customer, I figured, I wouldn't have to change carriers to get the coolest new gadget out there. And the $199 price tag seemed too good to be true.

So I looked into it. I love my iPod, but I hate having too many things in my pockets. Carrying a phone and iPod around with me just isn't going to happen. Put the two together? Awesome. Add a web browser? Even better.

As it turns out, getting the new iPhone isn't all that easy. Sure, it's $199 with a new contract, but you also have to spend another $30 a month for an iPhone data plan. No thanks. And the more I thought about it, the less interested I was in having my phone and iPod in the same place...

As much as I may have railed against the iPhone recently, I found myself standing in the AT&T store, dangerously close to purchasing one last week.

My old cell died...really unfortunate, since I was planning to hold onto it until I saw something really neat that I wanted. I went to the AT&T store, hoping it could be fixed, but to no avail. The only thing they could do was sell me a new phone. Before I could stop the words from coming, I heard myself blurt out "I'd kind of like an iPhone."

I went on to explain to the sales guy that I didn't like many of the things I'd heard about the iPhone, though I liked the idea of the device. Mobile e-mail, slick web browser, fun applications. The best touch screen available. What I don't like about the iPhone? Easy...
