Out to the ballgame.

I can't believe I haven't written in so long. I keep meaning to, but I've just honestly been so busy that the five minutes it takes to put fingers to keys just haven't been available.
And I do have lots to tell. Hopefully I'll get back this afternoon with another update...I want to tell you about my battles with wildlife especially.
But what I NEED to tell you about is Eagle Newspapers night at the SkyChiefs June 12. I'm pretty excited that we've chosen to honor five local guys who have played baseball in the major leagues. They'll throw out the ceremonial first pitches and be introduced for recognition. They'll also sign autographs and hang out for the game.
I was impressed to see that we have so many local folks who've made it to The Show...

On Walden Pond.

I feel like I'm fighting an ongoing and epic battle against nature. And I'm not winning.
The last couple of weeks have been punctuated with skirmishes with woodchucks, bats, and even an industrious spider who lives inside my Jeep.
Really, I've been dealing with the woodchucks and bats ever since I bought my house a few years ago. Two weeks after I moved in, I was greeted by the grunting, charging chuck in my backyard. My neighbor told me "Chuck" lived under my garage. As it turns out, "Chuck" is a lady. Now there are five woodchucks living under my garage...

A moment of silence.

It's funny how little you know about the world around you, and even about the people as close as next door.
I was in an illness-induced stupor all day Monday. And maybe that's how I missed what was happening. How I missed Walter's wife slipping away.
She died Monday. Her obituary says she died at the hospital, but according to my neighbor, Walter and his wife were found together on the floor of their house. The house right next door to mine, where I lay sleeping off a stomach bug.
Here's what I knew about Walter's wife, before today: She was a strong, humble woman. She loved her husband. She was from Ukraine. She was ill. She spoke such broken English that I could barely understand her.
Until today, I didn't even know her name...
