New stuff.

Posted by dlovell | 07/01/08

If you're reading this, you've already noticed our new blogging platform and design, and you've undoubtedly noticed the design changes throughout the cnylink.com website. But we're far from done making improvements.

We're in the midst of finishing up a new news platform that will make our news more readable, and will better integrate multimedia files within our stories. That means you can expect to see more videos and photo galleries, attached to the stories we post online.

The new platform will also allow our users to sort news based on the community they want to read about. Want just Baldwinsville news? You'll be able to get it with just a click of a button. Cazenovia? No problem...

RIP, George Carlin

Posted by dlovell | 06/23/08

You know, I didn't have much to say when Tim Russert died. And I don't really have much to say now, as the news of George Carlin's death has reached me.

But I will say this: Though I didn't agree with him on all points, I've always admitted that Mr. Carlin not only made us laugh, but think as well.

This clip from a television appearance in 1976 shows just how deeply Carlin thought about everything -- even the inner workings of a child's mind. And it shows that he had a respect and understanding of youth that few grownups can ever muster. Perhaps that was because he, unlike most other adults, never lost the youthful joy in living...

Inbox of treasures.

Posted by dlovell | 06/20/08

I don't know what I've done to deserve all the attention, but over the past few years I've received literally thousands of offers from all over the world in my e-mail. Every day, I get job offers, tips on losing weight, free gift cards -- and even secret offers from far-away lands, promising millions of dollars in exchange for my bank account information.

Why, just this morning, someone with the very credible name of Tom Bosley (Happy Days, anyone?) wrote to tell me how I can start my own bait shop online. And someone else (their name was omitted from the e-mail) told me they knew how I could save 70 cents per gallon on my gas. I've learned how to be a marketing superhero and boost my online visitors...

What terrifies me every day.

Posted by dlovell | 06/03/08

Let's face it: Most of us are just too darn busy to really pay attention. We live our lives in the hectic vacuums of individual existence, eeking out whatever joy we can. To really and truly consume information is a struggle.

Consider how much news you read or listen to in the course of a day. Now consider how much news there actually is to consume. How much news about health breakthroughs do you actually read? How about technology news? Sure, we're inundated daily with news about the presidential race, the tragedies around the world, the so-called war in Iraq. But there are real things happening every day that could alter your way of life dramatically. And most of us have no idea...

Tis the season.

Posted by dlovell | 05/22/08

I haven't written yet this season about the Yankees, primarily because they've been so awful that it's been hard to be optimistic. And it's too early in the season to give up just yet.

Well, now the season's a quarter of the way through, and there haven't been signs yet that the team is coming around. And though the Steinbrenners and Brian Cashman won't listen to me, I have an idea why.

First, "the big three." Ian Kennedy, Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain were billed throughout last season as the future of the Yankees. Nevermind that none of the three was truly tested in the Major Leagues. Or that none had pitched a full season in the majors yet...

Learning to die.

Posted by dlovell | 05/12/08

Randy Pausch is a dying man. I don't know him. We've never met or talked on the phone. But I know a lot about Randy, his family, the cancer that's choking the life from him all too early, and the way he's chosen to live and die.

Randy has an aggressive form of cancer, and he was recently given three to six months before his health would deteriorate drastically. So, on Sept. 18, Randy gave his last lecture at Carnegie Mellon, a talk entitled "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams." It's a striking and brutally honest address. It's funny, insightful, and filled with amazingly simple tips on how to live life.

Throughout the lecture, Randy leads you through his life, and the satisfaction and pride he has in achieving so much in such a short time...

Tax holiday.

Posted by dlovell | 05/05/08

Politicians are arguing now over whether it's wise to give Americans a break on gasoline taxes during the summer. It's no secret gas prices have shot through the roof recently, and the theory is that dropping the gas tax would put a few more dollars in our pockets and alleviate at least some of the pressure we've been put under in the last few weeks.

I was disgusted yesterday to see the Post-Standard slam the plan, claiming the government ought not make buying gas easier for motorists. That illustrious editorial board believes that only by applying pressure -- and making driving hurt -- will we finally be forced to change our driving habits. Perhaps we'll use more public transportation, or we'll all drive hybrids...
