One of the NFL’s commitment to kids is its “PLAY 60” initiative, which encourages kids to be active for at least 60 minutes per day.
I know I’m only 24, but my how things have changed.
Maybe its because I grew up in the country in a safe area where my parents didn’t have to supervise my siblings and me while we were outside, but I don’t think I sat down for 60 minutes per day when I was a kid—definitely not in the summer.
I remember during the school year waiting for my cousin’s bus to drive by (he lived only a few houses down but was in a different school district). His bus arrived about a half an hour after mine and it seemed like forever.
When I saw him get dropped off, one of us would ride our bikes to the other and play outside until our moms made us eat dinner.
I didn’t have a million video games to choose from. We had a SEGA Genesis, but I only had four games and I beat them pretty quickly.
Now the NFL has to go around to schools to teach kids activities they can do to keep active. Does no one play cops and robbers or tag or hide and seek anymore?
We played this one game called “Stay away from cars.” We would wait in the yard until a car approached then quickly ran to the shadows to avoid getting “hit” by the lights.
Red light, green light? Does any of this ring a bell to anyone?
I hope when my son is old enough (9 months might be a little young) it is still socially acceptable to send him outside and lock the door until dinner time.
